The Independence Community College Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that two finalists have been selected for the presidency of Independence Community College. We would personally like to thank the entire College community for your continued interest and support in the process to identify our next President.
The Independence Community College presidential finalists are (in alphabetical order):
Dr. Michael Calvert, PhD, has served as President of Pratt Community College since 2013. Previous to the President
position at PCC, Calvert served as Campus President/College Vice-President of Central
Community College, Grand Island, Nebraska from 2012-2013; Dean of Humanities and Social
Science, 2011-2012; Dean of Butler Learning Centers from 1998-2011; Interim Vice-President
for Academics 2010; Interim Dean, Advanced Technology Center, 2009 at Butler Community
College, El Dorado, Kansas; Associate Dean, Butler of Andover, Butler Community College,
1996-1998; Head Football Coach, Butler Community College, 1993–1996; Associate Dean
of Student Services Dana College, Blair Nebraska 1982-1984. Calvert has roots at ICC
and served as Head Football Coach from 1985-1989.
Dr. Calvert currently serves or has served on numerous groups and committees including
the American Association of Community College (AACC); Association of Community College
(AACC)Trustees; Member of Council of Instructional Administrators (KCIA); Kansas Council
of Instructional Administrators (KCIA). Kansas Nursing Foundation Board; ACC Commission
on Student Success; AACC Commission on Research, Technology, and Emerging Trends;
NJCAA Presidents Advisory Council, current Vice Chair; Past President and Executive
Committee; a member of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Athletics Conference;
Chair of EduKan Board of Directors and President of Council of presidents and member
of executive committee.
In his current role, Dr. Calvert lead Pratt’s 2019-2022 Strategic Plan development and launch focusing on student success, defined learning outcomes and aligned PCC’s initiatives to the Kansas Board of Regents and Higher Learning Commission accreditation metrics as well as initiating PCC’s first ever Diversity Council focusing on campus and community Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Dr. Calvert earned his PhD in Higher Education Administration from Oklahoma State University; an EdS (Educational Specialist) from Pittsburg State University, a Master of Arts from the University of South Dakota; and a Bachelor of Arts from Northwestern College. (Review Complete Resume Here)
Dr. Kimberly McDowall Long, PhD, has served in her current role of Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
at Newman University in Wichita, Kansas since 2016. Her previous positions include
Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Mary, Bismarck,
North Dakota 2008 – 2016; Professor/Faculty Member positions with University of Mary
and Chicago School of Professional Psychology; Academic Dean at Rasmussen College;
and Adjunct Instructor at Aakers College. Prior to entering into education, Dr. Long
served as an Organizational Consultant for Brynmor Associates; Manager and Marketing
Director at Eureka Manufacturing Company & Recreation Supply Company.
Dr. Long also holds a position of Accreditation Liaison Officer with the Higher Learning
Commission for Newman University and has served as a HLC Team Chair since 2019 and
a HLC Peer Reviewer since 2014.
In her current role, Dr. Long serves as Chair of the University’s Budget Committee; Chair of the 2019-2022 Strategic Planning Committee; Chair of Academic Assembly and Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.
Dr. Long was recently recognized in the Wichita Business Journal, August 2020 Issue in the Women Who Lead in Education segment.
Dr. Long earned her PhD in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Capella University,
Harold Abel School of Psychology; a Post-Masters Graduate Certificate in Executive
Human Resource Management and Consulting from Capella University, Harold Abel School
of Psychology; a Master of Management from the University of Mary; a Bachelor of Science
in Social and Behavioral Science (minor in
Philosophy/Theology) from the University of Mary; an AA in Psychology from Bismarck

Virtual Public forums will take place on Friday, February 5, 2021 and Friday, February
12, 2021.
We invite everyone to participate in these virtual forums. In each forum, there will
be a brief introduction of each candidate, followed by a question-and-answer session.
